The grand final has again been bumped back to October 1 in 2016, however the league says this is not a permanent arrangement. It hopes to start the 2017 season a week earlier to allow the showpiece match to return to return to its usual slot on the last Saturday in September. The season will start on Easter weekend this year, across March 24 to 28.

  • Melbourne Cup

    01/11/2016

The Emirates Melbourne Cup is a truly spectacular event: each year on the first Tuesday of November at 3pm, the greatest thoroughbreds from around the world gather at Flemington and battle it out for a stake of the $6.2-million prize money and to cement their names in history.

Emirates Melbourne Cup Day sits at the pinnacle of the Australian racing calendar and is the focal point of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. There's nothing like being there amongst the 100,000 plus crowd to experience the day that puts Australia firmly in the international sporting spotlight.

Trainers from around the world set their sights on the Emirates Melbourne Cup, a race widely considered to be the best staying handicap in the world. Over 3200 metres, the Emirates Melbourne Cup offers the richest prize in Australian sport and a 18ct solid gold Hardy Brothers trophy valued at $175,000. With such significant international standing, the anticipation of history in the making creates the electric atmosphere that is 'the race that stops a nation'.™

  • Crown Oaks Day

    03/11/2016

Traditionally known as ‘ladies day’, the racing highlight of Crown Oaks Day is the Group 1 Crown Oaks, a classic for three-year-old fillies over 2500m, with $1 million in prize money and a stunning winner’s trophy.

The elegant atmosphere of Crown Oaks Day fittingly plays host to the national final of Myer Fashions on the Field Women’s Racewear competition. Myer Fashions on the Field plays out over the first three racedays of the week and is as much a part of the Melbourne Cup Carnival as the horses.

Crown Oaks Day is a wonderful social occasion for friends to gather on this most stylish of days, and soak up the atmosphere in a glamorous environment, surrounded by manicured gardens, fine dining and beautiful marquees.

The official flower of Crown Oaks Day is the pink rose and can be purchased from flower sellers near the entrances, upon arrival to Flemington.

    Overview

Melbourne Food & Wine Festival is thrilled to announce Sense of Place as the overarching theme for 2016 and invites industry to shine a light on people, produce and places that evoke a strong sense of identity, community and connection to the local environment.

From famous dining spots to unexpected venues, rooftop bars to hidden cellars, each year the Festival goes beyond eating and drinking to create memory-making experiences.

Now in its 23rd year, the Festival highlights why Melbourne is a world-class gastronomic destination, attracting visitors from across Australia and around the globe.

A pop-up artisan bakery rising daily in the heart of the city; a long lunch for 1,500; a rollicking 'low and slow' barbecue opening party; and a global discussion on the future of food were just some of the unique ways that Melbourne's culinary spirit celebrated in 2015.
